Bernese Mountain Dogs are self-confident, good-natured and friendly and are therefore not only good pets and farm dogs, but also popular family dogs. They also have a pronounced watchful instinct without being aggressive. However, Bernese Mountain Dogs are not very suitable for dog sports that require great agility and speed. They are more suited to pulling work, rescue dog or tracking dog training, as well as areas of use where a kind of anticipatory obedience is required. They need a lot of freedom of movement. Hot weather is difficult for them due to their long and thick coat. They therefore feel most at home in winter and in cool or frosty temperatures.
